Academic Support

The PTA enhances academics in many ways at AG. The majority of the PTA budget goes to categories such as instructional supplies, staff development, technology and other needs. Below are additional areas of enhancement:

  • Battle of the Books - This North Carolina program is managed by our librarian Nancy Greene. Students read books from a reading list and then compete in a quiz-bowl competition against teams from other middle schools.
  • Math Counts - This activity offers an opportunity to excite and challenge students who love math and problem solving. Students will execute critical thinking skills to solve challenging problems in Algebra and Geometry. Individual students and/or a team of AG students may participate regionally. Interested students should speak to their math teacher.
  • Odyssey of the Mind - This internal educational program provides creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Teams consist of several students who are led by parent coaches. Teams are formed and begin meeting in the fall. Competitions are held in early spring and winning teams advance to State and World Finals.

  • Proctoring - Parents function as proctors for the 8th grade Computer Skills testing, the 7th Grade Writing test, and any other required needs.
  • Tutoring of AVID - One day each week from 10 - 11 am, this tutoring endeavor provides assistance to students using tutorials. If interested, email renee.troccoli@cms.k12.nc.us
